Glastonbury Festival
'Satisfaction' guaranteed?"

Many, many years ago, Mick Jagger was quoted as saying "I'd rather be dead than singing 'Satisfaction' when I'm 45." Yet last Saturday night (29 June), there he was, celebrating the approach of his 70th birthday (26 July), by singing 'Satisfaction' live on stage at the Glastonbury Festival 2013. Doubtless he was happy to be alive on stage as well as live on stage. But this week's Radio Times made a point of rubbing his nose in that ancient statement (although they quoted him as saying "when I'm 30!")

Have you ever said something which, in later years, you have to live down? Mick Jagger has lived in the spotlight for so long that he once said wryly "People think they know you. They know the things about you that you have forgotten." Perhaps people close to you also know things about you that you would like to forget!

Fortunately, I grew up before the Facebook age and so my youthful utterances died in the air the moment they were spoken. The curse of fame evaded me and only my closest family and friends can remind me of those things I would rather forget - for example, the ways I have sometimes failed to live up to the ambitions of my teenage years.

Hopefully, though, my commitment to Christ remains as firm and clear as when I first made it publically known on my baptism in September 1964. Mick Jagger might not agree, but it is in Christ that I get my 'Satisfaction' guaranteed.
