Night of the Long Knives?

ballot paper cross A couple of weeks ago I stepped out of the hustings held at the church and commented that there was not the slightest chance that I would vote for one of the more whacky independent candidates. The person to whom I was speaking quite rightly reminded me that we were both fortunate to live in a country where such a candidate could have their say and we could choose to vote for them or not. Freedom is a heady brew, and we lift its cup to our lips with caution. Occasionally we spill it through carelessness and at other times we drink too much and forget ourselves.

ballot paper cross On the day after a General Election which has shocked some and delighted others, I queried one commentator describing it as a "night of the long knives". Thankfully it was no such thing. Discord, disagreement and hot tempers can be often be expressed here without resorting to violence. On the 70th anniversary of VE Day we do well to remember that and to savour the freedom.
