Thursday, March 25th, 2010; depart 9.40 am
St. Pancras and King’s Cross
Come and explore St. Pancras and King’s Cross, the centre of a huge new and fascinating development. Eurostar enthusiasts will have been to St. Pancras but, with our special guide, Gillian Blachford, we will explore and appreciate the work which went into its transformation. Just by the station is the German Gymnasium built in 1861, probably the first purpose built gym in Britain. It hosted the Olympic Games of 1866 but now displays plans and models of the new 67 acre site beginning to be built. Together with housing, a new university, sports centre and large open spaces, it’s the new mini-city of the future. Just a short walk away is the oasis of St. Pancras Old Church and its Churchyard. Here lie "the English Bach" (the great J.C.'s youngest son), Mary Wollstonecraft, Cecil Rhodes, Sir John Soanes and French aristocrats who fled from the Terror and now lie in a peaceful resting place near the Eurostar train to Paris!

Another short walk takes us to the splendid new Kings Place building – a handsome new centre for music and arts right beside the Regent’s Canal.

We will take the 9.40 am from Teddington Station (via Kingston), change at Vauxhall onto the Victoria Tube line and meet Gillian Blachford at St. Pancras. Coffee and lunch at St. Pancras, tea at Kings Place. For our guide £8. Don’t forget your travel pass!

Booking is essential. Please call Angela Carvill on 020 8977 0167.

Wednesday, April 21th, 2010;
Visit to Faversham and to Brogdale Farm
Peaceful Faversham with its hundreds of listed buildings has an exceptional society with its headquarters at the Fleur de Lis in Preston Street. The Faversham Society has, for many years, looked after the fabric and way of life in the town and produced dozens of publications on its history. It has built up a museum of local life and also acts as a Tourist Information Centre and provides guides for visitors.

After coffee we can be taken on a guided walk round the town, learn something of its explosive past (it was once the centre of the nation’s explosives industry), visit the Fleur de Lis and have lunch in one of many local pubs. April is blossom time and nearby is Brogdale Farm, home of the National Fruit Collection with over 2000 different varieties of apples, 550 of pears, 350 of plums, 320 of cherries – a collection which has been developed over the last 85 years to ensure that the diversity of fruit varieties are preserved for the future. We have a guided tractor tour in the afternoon and tea in the restaurant. There is also a farm shop. Time & costs – coach leaves from Teddington Library at 9 am. Coach £22. Tour of Faversham and entrance to museum £5. Brogdale including tractor tour £8.50.

Booking is essential. Please call Angela Carvill on 020 8977 0167.

Visit to Whitchurch Silk Mill This visit will include a cream tea floating on the Basingstoke Canal. At Whitchurch there is a delightful old mill tucked into the Hampshire countryside and making beautiful silk fabric. It was ‘rescued’ and restored in the 1980s by the Hampshire Building Preservation Trust and now weaves special orders of silk cloth for dresses for film and TV, banners for cathedrals and curtains for country houses. They also make lovely scarves and ties for their shop. We will have coffee on arrival, an introductory video and a guided tour explaining the intricacies of weaving this beautiful and ancient yarn.

In the afternoon we come back via Mytchett and take a boat ride on the Basingstoke canal complete with cream tea.
