Main Scripture:
Psalm 95:1–11
Related Scripture: Hebrews 3:7–11
Summary:
Psalm 95 gives us a powerful picture of what worship is, why we worship and how we should worship.
- Verses 1–2: We are called to worship God with joy and thanksgiving. This is reflected in our singingand shouting aloud in jubilation.
- Verses 3–5: We worship God because God is great. God is King, Creator and Lord over everything.
- Verse 6: Worship also involves humility and surrender, pictured through bowing and kneeling before God.
- Verse 7: We worship because we belong to God. He cares for His people like a shepherd’s care for his flock.
- Verses 8–11: True worship requires obedience to God and our hearts mustn’t be hard. Singing, shouting, bowing and kneeling to God mean little if our hearts remain hard towards Him.
Noteworthy:
- Worship should engage our hearts, minds, emotions and will.
- As Christians we will have favourites on styles of music and worship, but our personal preferences should never become more important than the God we are worshipping.
Main thought:
True worship is more than outward acts, postures and positions. It is our response to God in humility, surrender and obedience. The attitude of our worship must be with joy and thanksgiving.
